Moving Tips and checklists

Moving to a new home is a stressful process. Start packing early so you won’t feel overwhelmed.

-Make a list of what needs to be done
-Collect boxes from your local grocery store
-Start one room at a time
-Mark the boxes
-Pack non-essential items
-Sell or give away unwanted items

Before you leave
1. Give forwarding address to the post office for:
A. Credit cards company
B. Subscriptions
C. Family and Friends

2. Utilities
A. Gas/Electric
B. Water
C. Telephone
D. Propane
E. Garbage
F. Cable/TV
Make sure you get refund on any deposits made.

3. Medical, Dental & Medications
Ask your doctor and dentist for referrals, prescriptions needed to be transferred, eyeglasses, X-rays, medical records

4. Bank
A. Transfer funds
B. Arrange credit references
C. Empty safety deposit box

5. Insurance
Notify your company of your new location for coverage: life, health, fire & auto

6. Delivery Service
Newspaper, laundry, etc…

7. Pets
Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, etc…

DON’T FORGET TO:
. Empty freezer, plan to use foods weeks prior to move
. Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator
. Have appliances serviced for moving
. Clean rugs and clothing before moving and have them moving-wrapped
. Check with your mover about insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment
. Plan for special care needs of infants and pets

ON MOVING DAY:
. Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover the cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in your new city
. Carry jewelry and documents yourself, or use registered mail
. Plan for transpiration of pets
. Let close friend or relative know your route and schedule including overnight stops, use him or her as message quarters
. Make a final walk-through of the house to make sure it’s empty. Double check closets, drawers, shelves
. Leave all old keys needed by new owner with your Realtor or neighbor

AT YOUR NEW ADDRESS:
. Check on service of gas, electric, telephone, water and garbage
. Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater and furnace
. Ask post office for any mail they may be holding
. Register children in new school. Arrange to have school records transferred to your children’s new school district and/or daycare
. Notify DMV of the move for driver’s license & registration
